Environmental Impact on Manufacturing
Buying Locally is Greener
Buying local has a great impact on the environment. When you purchase goods from domestic and community manufacturers, these goods have fewer roads to travel before they get to you. That means less transportation costs and less fuel consumption! By buying local you support your area’s economy and keep your community strong and vibrant, while leaving a smaller footprint on the Earth.
Small businesses need all the help we can give them. Did you know that over 99% of the nation’s employers are small businesses? The U.S. economy depends on these companies, and they need our support now more than ever.
Local artisans, inventors and manufacturers put their heart and soul into creating quality products for this country’s consumers. “American ingenuity” doesn’t only refer to cars, software, health care and other sectors you might associate with this phrase. It’s present in the neighborhood shoemaker with an innate passion for his profession, and seen in the exceptional craftsmanship of a violin created by a woman devoted to turning wood into functional art. You can’t find that just anywhere. Products that lack this special essence cannot enhance your quality of life in the same way.
“You get what you pay for” may be an old cliché, but it couldn’t be more appropriate than it is today. During the 1930’s through the 1960’s, consumers made purchases based on quality. They saved their money and then made the investment in the appliance brand they knew would last for 15-20 years. Today, when that VCR or DCD player breaks, we just throw it away, then spend another $100-200 to buy the latest and greatest gadgets. The impact of this “throw away” society on the landfills in America is staggering.
By changing our mindset to buying quality items instead of inexpensive goods, we can reverse the “throw away” trend and return American manufacturing to being the same strong backbone of our economy today as it was in yesteryear. And when you purchase local goods, your money returns to you in the form of a thriving local economy that is able to meet the needs of its community.
